FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
MDP Chair Responds to People's Veto to Protect Election Day Registration Making it On The Ballot
Augusta - Today Secretary of State Charlie Summers announced that more than 70,000 signatures were accepted, therefore requiring a statewide vote on Question 1 this November 8. Question 1 will read:
"Do you want to reject the section of Chapter 399 of the Public Laws of 2011 that requires new voters to register to vote at least two business days prior to an election?"
Ben Grant, chairman of the Maine Democratic Party, released this statement:
"I have no doubt that the people of Maine will restore same day voter registration at the ballot box this November. It never should have been removed in the first place. We've had this right for 38 years and it's done nothing but increase voter turnout and make it possible for hard-working Mainers who are struggling to make ends meet participate in our election process. It's exciting to see this people's veto process move forward. A lot of Mainers worked really hard to make this happen and they should be applauded for their work."
