GOP Candidates for Governor Must Reject Party Platform
PORTLAND- Saturday, delegates to the Republican State Convention were stunned when Tea Party activists proposed and passed an alternative party platform. Perhaps more surprising is the content of that platform.
The document calls for the abolition of the Department of Education, makes the nonsensical claim that 'freedom of religion is not freedom from religion' and even demands that the United States be removed from United Nations treaties. The platform specifically rejects the 'Convention on the Rights of the Child'. This important document spells out basic human rights for children and insists that governments must work to ensure basic human rights for children (http://www.unicef.org/crc/). This Tea Party platform was officially adopted by the Maine Republican Party on Saturday.
"Its official, the Maine GOP has been hijacked by the far right," said Victory 2010 Campaign Manager Arden Manning, "But don't take my word for it, just ask the Senate Republican's legal counsel." Dan Billings, legal counsel for the Maine Senate Republicans wrote, "Whoever wrote [the new platform] is ignorant of the Constitution...What was adopted is idiotic and extreme" (asmainegoes.com, 5/8/10, Platform discussion).
"Republican candidates for governor need to make a decision: Do they stand with the fringe that has taken over their Party or do they stand with mainstream Mainers? Today, I am calling on the Republican candidates for governor to officially reject their Party's platform, " Manning said.
"Highlights" of GOP Platform:
- Reject the UN Treaty on Rights of the Child.
- Reject "LOST" the Law Of The Sea Treaty.
- Reassert the principle that "Freedom of Religion" does not mean "freedom from religion".
- Defeat Cap and Trade, investigate collusion between government and industry in the global warming myth, and prosecute any illegal collusion.
- Eliminate the Department of Education
