Dems Call on GOP Candidates for Governor to Demand Steele's Resignation

AUGUSTA- Wednesday, amidst continuing allegations of out of control spending by Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, the Maine Democratic Party urged Maine Republican Candidates for Governor to demand Steele's resignation. "Republican candidates for Governor like to talk about supposed reckless spending by others, but the RNC remains a hotbed for irresponsible use of donor funds," said Arden Manning, coordinated campaign manager for the Democrats.

In the last few weeks it has come to light that the Republican National Committee spent $17,000 on chartered flights, $13,000 in limousine expenses, $9,000 at a swank Beverly Hills hotel and $2000 at a bondage themed nightclub.  Chairman Steele even considered buying a private jet for the Republican Party.  LINK "While Mainers and Americans are struggling, this excessive spending goes to show that Republicans are out of step with hard working values," said Manning.

"It is time for Maine Republicans to take action. GOP candidates for Governor can either toe the Party line or they can call for Steele's resignation and demand that Maine GOP Chair Charlie Webster do the same. I believe that Maine Republican candidates for Governor owe it to GOP donors, activists and regular Mainers."

While few leading national Republicans have publicly called on Steele to step down, on Tuesday New Hampshire's RNC Committeeman resigned in protest of Steele's failed leadership.  Republican Chairman Steele serves at the pleasure of RNC members like Maine GOP Chairman Charlie Webster.  Webster in turn serves his Party's candidates for Governor. "It is very simple," said Manning, "Maine Republican candidates for Governor must call for Steele's resignation and use their influence over Webster to get him to do the same."
