Michaud Announces Investments in Local Fire and Rescue Departments

BANGOR, ME - Today, Congressman Mike Michaud praised the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) announcement that Lamoine, Littleton, and Stockholm will receive federal assistance for fire and rescue operations through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program (AFG).  Full funding details can be found below.

"Investments in our firefighters will improve public safety by providing the best training, equipment and facilities we can offer," said Michaud.  "With additional resources, first responders can better serve the needs of our communities."

According to DHS, the AFG program is an important component of the larger, coordinated effort to strengthen the nation's overall level of preparedness and ability to respond to fire and related hazards.  The AFG program makes investments directly to fire departments and EMS organizations to enhance their ability to protect the health and safety of the public, as well as that of first-responder personnel. The program has two funding priorities:

  • Operations and Safety Program Area: Eligible activities are limited to training, equipment, personal protective equipment, wellness and fitness, and health and safety modifications to stations and facilities.
  • Vehicle Acquisition Program Area: Eligible apparatus available include, but are not limited to, pumpers, aerials, brush trucks, tankers, rescue vehicles, ambulances, foam units, and fireboats.
