Congresswoman Chellie Pingree announces $3.1million to protect women in Maine
 
Funds will hire domestic violence prosecutors,streamline protection from abuse orders, and more

Today Congresswoman Chellie Pingree announced that four grants totaling over $3million have been awarded to Maine programs working to stop violence againstwomen.
 
"No woman in this state should have to live in fear of abuse, sexual violence,or other threats, but sadly many do-far too many," said Pingree.  "Thesefunds will help support and launch efforts dedicated to changing that reality."
 
Awarded by the Department of Justice, the grants include:
 
·     $2.3 million to the University of Southern Maine'sMuskie School to administer and review the effectiveness ofgrants awarded by the Office of Violence Against Women;


·     $399,000 to York County to hire prosecutors to prosecute domestic violencecases, and train law enforcement officers in handling stalking and domesticviolence;


·     $228,000 to help the Maine Department of Public Safety make protection from abuse orders more efficient,accessible, and widely used; and  


·     $119,000 to support the Maine Coalition Against SexualAssault's collaborative work to end violence againstwomen.
