MichaudAnnounces Funding for MaineFerry Service

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressman Mike Michaud announced that theU.S. Department of Transportation has awarded $600,000 to the Maine State FerryService (MSFS) to replace and upgrade the Bass Harbor Docking Facility.

"Ferry services provide a vital link to Maine's many island communities,"said Michaud.  "This funding will promote safety by improving the dockinfrastructure.  Investments like these will make a real difference for theusers and operators of this ferry service."

According to the Department of Transportation, this funding will be used forthe construction and refurbishment of docking facilities for the Maine StateFerry Service (MSFS) at the Bass Harbor Terminal.  The Bass Harbor dockingfacility is determined to be at risk of sudden failure and needs completereplacement and upgrade of all rubber fenders; wave fence replacements; towerconcrete repairs; and a new generator to power bridges and the terminal. The purpose of this project is to address immediate and serious safety issuesdue to excessive wear from wave action. Swans Island and Frenchboro Island werewithout ferry service while the program was shut down for 12 days in the lasttwo years due to the need for temporary emergency repairs. This project willprotect the previous investments in infrastructure. The MSFS is the key tosustaining year round populations on these islands.
