Respond to Green/GOP Alliance Against Tax Cuts
AUGUSTA- The Maine Democratic Party responded to Greens joining ranks with the
Republicans in opposing the Democratic-led income tax cut and reform
package. Arden Manning, executive director of the Maine Democratic Party
issued the following statement:
"Beginning in 2006 when John Eder's reelection campaign accepted the help
of Republican leader Josh Tardy, the Greens in Portland have moved closer to
the Republican Party. I am not surprised that the Greens have joined the
GOP in this effort to roll back tax cuts. However, I continue to be very
surprised that the Republicans are investing time in this effort which seems so
contrary to what their party has said it stands for. For years the GOP
has said that only they can cut your taxes. But Democrats in Augusta
succeeded in accomplishing what Republicans have only talked about for the last
5 years: we actually cut Mainers income taxes. The Democratic plan
makes sure that visitors to Maine pay their fair share and lowers Mainers
income taxes."
"The Republican Party and its leaders, Kevin Raye and Josh Tardy have
launched a petition gathering effort which in effect will raise taxes.
It is no surprise that this effort appears to have gained little
support, only raising $50 in the last filing period. In this economy, I
think the majority of Mainers will welcome lower income taxes. This
whole GOP effort against tax cuts simply shows that they are out of step with
the mainstream".
