Maine Dems Welcome Rep. Barney Frank to
Maine for Pride Event
(AUGUSTA, MAINE) - In honor of the historic passage of Maine's marriage
equality law, Congressman Barney Frank will join the Maine Democratic Party for
a celebration on June 20th during Southern Maine Pride 2009. The event, a
grassroots fundraiser for the Maine Democratic Party, will recognize Maine
legislators who were vocal advocates for the marriage equality law. The
event will last from 6 to 9 in the evening on Saturday June 20th at the
Harbour's Edge Room on Custom House Wharf in Portland.
"We are honored that Rep. Frank will join us in Maine this year",
said Arden Manning, executive director of the Maine Democratic Party.
"As a consistent advocate for the LGBT community, I am sure Rep. Frank was
pleased to learn that Maine becomes just the fifth state in the nation to
support full marriage equality. We are thrilled to have the
Representative join us in thanking Maine legislators for their courageous work
on this issue in Augusta."
Congressman Frank commented, "I'm very glad to be able to congratulate my
neighbors in Maine on this latest affirmation of their commitment to
fairness. I'm especially pleased to be able to thank my friend and former
House colleague, Governor Baldacci, for signing it. And I'm happiest of
all to be attending with my partner, Jim Ready, a Maine resident who is proud
of his state."
As chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Rep. Frank has been a
leading voice of reason through the many recent economic recovery debates in
Washington. He is regarded as a champion for civil rights and for the LGBT
community in particular.
