Michaud Congratulates Maine Presidential Scholars

Students from Lewiston and Brewer chosen for one of the nation's highest honors for high school students

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressman Mike Michaud praised the announcement of the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars and the U.S. Department of Education that Erin Mills of Brewer High School and Michael Girouard of St. Dominic Regional High School will be Maine's members of the 45th class of Presidential Scholars.  Every year, one young man and one young woman from each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, U.S. families living abroad, and 15 "at-large" Scholars are honored for their scholarship and service.

"Erin and Michael's achievements, in the classroom and in their communities, deserve this national recognition," said Michaud.  "They are evidence of the talent and dedication found in Maine students.  I am very proud that they have been selected to represent Maine as our Presidential Scholars."

The Presidential Scholars program was established in 1946 to honor the academic excellence, artistic accomplishments, and civic contributions of exemplary graduating high school students.  Students are evaluated on their SAT or ACT scores; school reports and transcripts; leadership activities; and contributions to their family, school and community.  This year's 141 Scholars were chosen from a nominating pool of 3,000 outstanding students.
