Outside Groups Attack Allen, Maine’s Workers With False Claims

Most of you have seen the ridiculous ads being aired by huge corporations like Wal-Mart in an effort to distort the Employee Free Choice Act and Tom Allen’s support for the rights of workers to unionize. The ads are completely 100% false! The Employee Free Choice Act that Tom supported gives workers an additional way to sign up for a union, but it does not take away their right to a secret ballot. The bill actually makes it easier to organize by giving them an additional option, because current law allows time for employers to intimidate and threaten their employees to make sure they are never able to form a union at all.

With hundreds of thousands of dollars behind these ads, we need your help in getting the truth out to your friends, neighbors and relatives about the facts of the Employee Free Choice Act, and where Tom Allen and Susan Collins stand on the issues of hard-working Mainers. Click here to learn the truth and how to help.

And this weekend, August 23-24, volunteers will go door to door in a “Canvass for Truth” in order to get the facts out to Maine people about these false and insulting ads. Click here to find a canvass or phone-bank opportunity near you.

This Thursday, you can join Chellie for a house party with special guest Congresswoman Donna Edwards. The party starts at 5:00 p.m. at the home of Harold and Claudia Pachios in Cape Elizabeth. Rep. Edwards was sworn in this summer as the newest member of Congress, representing Maryland's 4th District. Read about Donna's upset win in Maryland here.

For more info or to RSVP for either event call 773-0155.

Two More Groups Stand Up For Chellie

The National Association of Letter Carriers, AFL-CIO, and the J-Street Pac have both endorsed Chellie Pingree's House campaign. The National Association of Letter Carriers represents more than 300,000 active and retired letter carriers across the country.

The J-Street PAC endorses candidates who believe "in the strategic value of tough, smart diplomacy to help resolve conflicts in the Middle East." J- Street called Chellie "a stalwart advocate for Israeli-Palestinian peace," and said they are "proud to endorse this fearless candidate."

Equality Maine Endorses Tom Allen Over Susan Collins

Tom Allen has won the endorsement of EqualityMaine, the state's oldest and largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) advocacy organization. The group cited Allen’s work “to eliminate discrimination in jobs, housing, public accommodations and financial matters,” and for sponsoring legislation to repeal the military’s “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy, while Collins has refused to do the same in the Senate. Way to go, Tom!

Congratulations to all the volunteers who helped make 30,000 phone calls in last week’s 2008 Dials for a 2008 Victory one-day event. Special recognition goes out to Kennebec County, whose volunteers in Augusta, Hallowell, Waterville, Winthrop and Mount Vernon recorded over 5,000 dials, more than any other county! Way to go everyone! For a list of canvasses and phone-bank opportunities in the coming week, click here: www.mainedems.org/action.html
