Launches Voter Registration Drives at Filling Stations as Big Oil Releases Quarterly Profits
(PORTLAND) - As Big Oil reports record profits this week, Obama's Maine Campaign for Change will be registering voters at gas stations across the Pine Tree State. Campaign for Change will hold "Pump up the Vote" registration drives TOMORROW, Thursday, July 31, 2008 in Brewer, Portland, Lewiston, and Whiting. Volunteers will talk with motorists about Barack Obama's plan to deliver relief at the pump and reduce America's dependence on foreign oil and encourage them to make their voices heard in the upcoming election.
Rising fuel prices have hit Maine families and businesses hard over recent months. According to AAA, Mainers are paying an average of $3.96 per gallon for regular unleaded, and $4.80 per gallon for diesel. The price of regular gas in Maine has risen from an average of $2.94 one year ago, an increase of over 34%.
"The Bush-McCain energy policy is burning a hole in the pockets of Maine families and businesses," said Toby McGrath, Obama's State Director for Maine. "With gas at more than $4 a gallon in much of the state, Mainers are looking for real relief. As Exxon Mobile reports its profits, volunteers will be out in force at gas stations, talking to drivers about the kind of change Barack Obama will deliver and registering them to vote."
Exxon Mobile, the world's largest oil company, will report its quarterly profit earnings on Thursday.
